Islay is chain of islands in the southern most region of Scotland. Islay is also known as ‘The Queen of the Hebrides’; and also is undoubtedly the ruler of it’s certain type of single malt scotch whiskeys, which is smoky and peaty style whisky. Currently there are 8 distilleries in the region.
The source of the smoky flavour in the Islay whisky is from burning peat and malting barley over it. It is also believed by some that the distillation in Scotland came from Ireland through Islay in the 13th Century.
Ingredients used in distillation of Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky are seaweed, brine, carbolic soap, apple, smoke and kippers.
Though there are currently 8 distilleries in Islay as of now and more set to arrive; there’s one ‘Port Ellen’, the legendary distiller who shut down in 1983. They are still believed to be the distillers of the most typical Islay whisky.
